Bullying has always existed; however, with social media and the immediate access to technology, everyone is more aware of this issue. In order for schools to respond appropriately to aggression and bullying, they must understand the reasons behind those behaviors. All behaviors are a form of communication. A school has the responsibility to create safe learning environments where students feel welcome and comfortable attending their classes. When that does not happen, it causes a negative impact on the student’s health and academics. In this course, participants will first identify the reasons why students bully and exhibit aggressive behaviors and the impact this has on the student who is the victim of bullying. In part two, participants will learn about the different ways bullying occurs both in and out of the school building. Participants will also learn the warning signs that someone is being bullied. In the third and final part of this course, participants will understand the school’s role in responding to aggression and bullying by reviewing local and federal laws. Participants will understand how parents, communities, and schools can prevent bullying from occurring and how to work together as a team to respond to these situations.

The contemporary classroom asks more of teachers than ever before. Academic content must be taught alongside equally important competencies such as social-emotional skills, problem solving, critical thinking, self-regulation, and learning dispositions. When taught discretely, this can become an overwhelming task. But when intentionally integrated they become a synergistic and mutually supportive curriculum. This is where cooperative learning truly shines. As one of the most widely studied instructional techniques, cooperative learning addresses content alongside other curricular competencies, allowing teachers to effectively cover multiple standards simultaneously. Unfortunately, cooperative learning is often tried and dismissed because it does not seem to work for a particular developmental range, population, or subject area. This is often due to a misapplication of the technique. This course will explain the philosophical underpinnings and walk participants through the necessary components of cooperative learning. Participants will see examples of what works, what doesn't, and why. If you are looking for a fun way to cover a diverse curriculum while keeping students engaged and learning, this course is for you.
This course enhances classroom teaching effectiveness and supports improved student outcomes by introducing new knowledge in philosophy and key components of cooperative learning, demonstrating how its intentional integration can help teachers effectively teach academic content alongside social-emotional skills and critical thinking, while addressing common challenges and providing practical examples to keep diverse students engaged and learning.

Formal education is facing a new and serious threat: competition. Technology has ushered in a new era that literally provides a world of information at our fingertips. And it does so in a way that is winning-over learners. How? Storytelling. Yes, the modern competition that traditional education faces is winning the attention of our students because it taps into one of the most ancient human traits - our interest in hearing a compelling story.
Grant Sanderson (of 3Blue1Brown). Brady Haran (of Numberphile). Simone Giertz. Michael Stevens (better known as Vsause). Neil Degrasse Tyson. Why will children who can barely focus in class watch complex content from these educators for hours on end? Because they understand the craft of storytelling. And this realization is not confined to popular culture. For a decade now, organizations from Edutopia to the American Educational Research Association to the Harvard Business Review have been encouraging educators to embrace the craft of storytelling.
It is time. Learn how content can be presented as story. Learn how to draw students into a compelling world that engages their curiosity and passion. Learn the craft of Storytelling in Teaching.

The adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) has energized educators to engage K–12 students in meaningful, inquiry-based science learning. With its 3-Dimensional Framework—encompassing Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas—NGSS helps students develop the skills needed to explore and make sense of the world around them. However, many widely available curricula lack the local relevance needed to fully engage students in scientific investigation. This course emphasizes the importance of place-based, locally relevant science instruction and guides educators in designing NGSS-aligned curriculum that connects students to the phenomena and environments they know best. Participants will learn strategies for integrating local context into science teaching to make learning more authentic, accessible, and impactful for all students.
This course enhances classroom teaching effectiveness and supports improved student outcomes by introducing new knowledge in designing and implementing NGSS-aligned science instruction that leverages place-based and locally relevant phenomena to deepen student engagement, foster inquiry-based learning, and develop scientific literacy through authentic, meaningful connections to students' own communities and environments.

This course will introduce students to the principles of associative conditioning and choice behaviors. Basic concepts include classical conditioning and operant conditioning which are introduced before delving into choice behavior. Classical conditioning will include the three learning phases (acquisition, extinction, and spontaneous recovery) while explaining how different stimuli (neutral, unconditioned, conditioned) produce responses (conditioned or unconditioned). Additionally, operant conditioning will include the three learning phases mentioned beforehand; however, this will also introduce reinforcements (reinforcements/punishments) and reinforcer schedules (ratio/interval) and the resulting responses in behavior. Lastly, to extend conditioning, this course will include motivating operations which can change the value of reinforcers which relate to changes in behavior. Educational environments can benefit from behavioral understanding of choice and increase wanted behaviors.

In this course, learners will explore the concept of linguicism (language biases) and learn how this largely invisible form of discrimination emerges in our societies and classrooms, with a particular focus on English as the current lingua franca. Under the proliferation of dominant languages and monolingual ideologies, thousands of languages and cultures around the world continue to disappear, resulting in a global loss of wisdom and modalities of thinking and being. This language streamlining also has consequential impacts on human beings’ connections to the natural world, including fellow animals, and humans’ willingness to engage in acts of protection and advocacy. A resurgence of government-issued language censorship has also disseminated across the globe, intersecting with human rights violations and raising questions about the future of language. This course will guide learners through understanding linguicism in their lives, provide reflection spaces for considering and unlearning linguicism, and offer instruction on how to make the shift towards a more exciting, liberated approach to global language use.

The goal of this course is to learn about the history of the American flag and the unique tradition of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools. Educators will also learn whether participation in the pledge by students is mandated by the United States government or if it is a matter of personal choice.
A crucial component of this course will be to recognize the significant and powerful symbol that the American flag serves for the people of the United States of America. Throughout American history, the flag has been a symbol with a multitude of meanings and interpretations.
It will be a helpful guide through the course to consider the flag as a flexible symbol in both function and spirit. Just as the wind and rain may reproach the physical flag without causing damage, the spirit of that flag can also withstand criticism and protest. And, just as the wind may cause us to pause and look upon the wavering symbol to consider its strength and flexibility, criticism and protest might also give us pause to deeply consider what the American flag truly stands for, not only for ourselves or some citizens, but for all citizens.
To know the history of the American flag is to know our nation and its citizens better. The knowledge gained in this course should enable greater empathy for our neighbors and students by understanding the constitutional underpinnings that imbue the American flag with the maturity and confidence to handle diverse interpretations. That one person's interpretation does not devalue our own interpretation, but strengthens the concept of democracy and “love thy neighbor”. Knowing the history of the American flag can be a significant step toward mutual respect and toward becoming confident enough in our democracy to allow space for others to share in the promise of America, in thought and in action, in ways of their own choosing.
This course enhances classroom teaching effectiveness and supports improved student outcomes by introducing new knowledge in the American Flag and Pledge of Allegiance in public education.
