Financial Conflicts of Interest in Sponsored Projects
Research sponsors require Principle Investigators (PIs) receiving an award to disclose any Financial Conflicts of Interest (FCOI) that may exist. A disclosure form is utilized to disclose a potential conflict or to verify that a conflict does not exist.
PIs receiving a research award are also required to complete FCOI training through the CITI online training system. FCOI training does not expire and is only required once regardless of how many awards a PI receives.
Research Integrity and Compliance has oversight of the FCOI process when the conflict involves an award from a research sponsor. Conflicts are managed via a documented Conflict Management Plan if necessary.
General conflicts of interest that do not involve an award from a research sponsor are managed by the ISU Office of General Counsel.
PIs and Co-PIs that have received an award from a research sponsor must complete an FCOI Disclosure Form and CITI FCOI training. A separate FCOI Disclosure Form must be completed for each award since conflicts tend to be award specific. CITI FCOI training does not expire and only needs to be completed once regardless of the number of awards a PI receives.
PIs with an FCOI for a specific research project can usually continue to work on the project after a written Conflict Management Plan has been established. The focus of the Conflict Management Plan is to identify measures that can be implemented to ensure the research is objective and unbiased.
