Animals in Research
Idaho State University is committed to conducting biomedical research involving animals in a humane and ethical manner.
The ISU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) must review and approve all research proposals prior to the start of research.
Animal Care Facility (ACF) staff provide safe housing for ISU research animals and are responsible for each animal's health and care.
Research proposals involving animals must be reviewed and approved by the ISU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) prior to obtaining animals and prior to starting the research.
Following are key elements of the IACUC review and approval process.
- Animal research proposals must comply with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act and PHS Policy. Specific requirements depend on the animal species and research sponsor involved.
- Proposed protocols must apply the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) whenever feasible to ensure the minimum number of research animals are utilized and the animals utilized are treated as humanely as possible.
- A risk assessment for the proposed protocol and a medical surveillance form for each researcher participating in the protocol must be completed to protect human health & safety.
- Researchers must complete training regarding proper animal use and handling prior to participating in an approved animal research protocol.
Most animal research proposals require several revisions to achieve IACUC approval.
