Physics

Welcome to Idaho State Physics
Here at the Idaho State University Department of Physics, we prepare students for various careers with a comprehensive education in the principles and applications of physics.
Physicists are at the forefront of educational, industrial, and government sectors, with jobs at Idaho National Laboratory, Micron, and LA Semiconductor, to name a few. With multiple degree programs available, we aim to equip students with the skills they need to excel and thrive in their chosen careers within the dynamic world of physics or as they further their education.
Our undergraduate program is designed to provide a flexible course schedule that will suit your academic and career goals. We offer a variety of degrees, including a physics minor, an Associate of Science, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Science degree, each providing a comprehensive, hands-on education. Along with undergraduate degrees, our graduate program includes a Master of Science in Physics and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics. Both degrees are tailored to the individual’s interests through faculty consultation to ensure the best possible outcome for each student.
Our Pocatello campus is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and students have ample opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, and more. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are just a short drive away.
If you are well-suited to tasks that require problem-solving skills, logical thinking, mathematics, and good observation, then we encourage you to schedule a visit with the Department of Physics to learn more about the program.
Research Areas
Applied Physics
This research involves using principles from physics to develop practical applications and technologies, ranging from medical imaging devices to electronic components.
Beyond the Standard Model Physics
An emerging new field that investigates theoretical frameworks and experimental evidence that could extend or modify the current understanding of fundamental particles and forces beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.
Fundamental Symmetries
This research explores the underlying symmetrical principles in nature, such as conservation laws and parity, providing insights into the fundamental forces governing the universe.
High Energy Physics
Scientists in this field study the properties and behavior of particles at high energy levels, often using particle accelerators to explore the fundamental building blocks of matter.
Nuclear and Particle Physics
This field explores the behavior of atomic nuclei, particle properties, and fundamental forces, with applications spanning energy production, medical imaging, and the quest to comprehend the universe's basic laws.

Physics Programs
The ISU Department of Physics offers many degree options including a Physics minor, an Associate of Science, a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, a Ph.D. in Applied Physics and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science in cooperation with the College of Engineering.
Undergraduate Programs
An Associates degree is available for those completing an introductory sequence of physics courses.
A Bachelor of Arts or minor in Physics are also available to aid students seeking an interdisciplinary education.
The Bachelor of Science program provides a core curriculum focusing on physics and related courses. Beyond the core curriculum the student may choose from physics and related courses in order to complete the degree. The program is designed to provide a flexible degree that can be used for a career in physics or closely related fields. The student should complete a B.S. before progressing to a Master of Science in physics. BS course requirements.
Please see the Physics section of the undergraduate catalog for required classes and more program information.
Graduate Programs
The Master of Science in Physics program is tailored to the student's needs. An appropriate faculty member should be consulted when tailoring the program to meet student needs.
The Ph.D. Applied Physics is available in the areas of Radiation Science, Accelerator Applications and Applied Nuclear Physics.
