As the State's natural history museum, the IMNH Education Department offers unique educational materials and classroom visits for teachers and students across the state. This material is curated by REAL scientists who are experts in the field and make use of REAL Idaho fossils. Our educational programing is tied to state standards, and we incorporate current best-practices to ensure student-led exploration is meaningful and engaging.

Field Trips
Whether you’re visiting with a group of five or 50, the Idaho Museum of Natural History can offer your students an authentic experience like none other. We customize field trip experiences to encompass all areas of STEM education in alignment with the Idaho State Standards: Science and Social Studies Standards for This is Idaho. Exhibit Interpreters and Museum staff offer insight on gallery exhibitions while the Science Discovery Center offers a free-choice learning environment for scientific discovery. Field Trip Requests
- Please submit your request at least one week prior to your desired date.
- Submitting a request does not guarantee a reservation.
- Field trip group rates are $4/student, active chaperones receive free admission
K-12 Outreach Programs
We know that distances in Idaho can be a hurdle, along with field trip budgets being tight. This is why we also offer visits to your classroom, for free! One of our experienced educators will come to your class, for an hour or a whole day, and deliver high-quality, standards-based natural history education to your students, anywhere in Idaho.

Robert J. Gay is an educator and paleontologist. His educational work has focused on increasing rural students' access to authentic science experiences in Arizona, Colorado, and Idaho, and crafting non-intrusive evaluation protocols for museum education. His research covers the rise of the dinosaurs in Bears Ears National Monument and the Age of Dinosaurs in Idaho.
