ISU Geosciences' Field Geology course is a rewarding experience that is designed to prepare students to become confident, broadly-trained field geologists ready to pursue future careers in the geosciences or dive into research projects in graduate school.

Prerequisites:

  • The most important prerequisite is for a student to be in STRONG physical condition and be ready to “jump in with both feet” to an intensive group learning experience. 
  • Those applying should be a junior or senior Geosciences Major (or similar major).
  • Specific course prerequisites are flexible, except that Structural Geology, Sedimentary Geology, and Mineralogy (or equivalent) are required with a minimum grade of “C” or better.
  • This course is open to undergraduate (and graduate) students from outside universities that are looking to fulfill degree requirements at their home university to attend a geology field camp, and to students that simply want to further develop their geoscience skills by exploring geology in the field!

 

We will begin accepting applications on Nov. 1st, 2025, and prefer applications be submitted before January, 20th 2026.  Applications that are received before January 20th will be considered for early acceptance. This also gives you time to apply for many of the field camp scholarships that are due early in the year. After January 20th, applications will be considered as they come in, and will continue to be accepted until camp is filled. Apply early! Our camp fills rapidly each year, and was full before the January 20th deadline.

Scholarship Opportunities

The following are scholarship opportunities offered by national organizations. Many local geological societies and organizations offer field camp scholarships as well. Be sure to apply for these opportunities below, in addition to checking with your local organizations and home institution about the field camp scholarships that may be available to you.

AIPG National Undergraduate Scholarship: Not specifically for field camp. Scholarship awards in the amount of $1,000.00 - $3,000 each will be made to eligible students attending a college or university in the U.S. Scholarships are intended to be used to support tuition and/or room and board. Any student who is majoring in geology (or earth science), is at least a sophomore, and is attending a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the U.S. can apply.

AEG Beardsley-Kuper Geology Field Camp Scholarship:  Scholarship open to any student in engineering geology, environmental geology, geological engineering, or closely programs to attend a geology (or closely related) field camp. This scholarship has sometimes paid the ENTIRE cost of tuition and fees. Must be a member of AEG. Past ISU Field Camp students Kawner Sistrunk and Grant Bradbury were awarded this scholarship in 2023.  Application deadline is January 15th each year.

AEG Tilford Field Studies Scholarship: Scholarship open to undergraduate students to defray cost of a geology field camp course or senior thesis field research, or graduate students who will use this scholarship toward field research. Must be a member of AEG. Application deadline is January 15th each year.

AAPG Foundation L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Program If you are a student attending a U.S. university and you plan to attend field camp in the summer next year, you will want to stay tuned. Please check back at this link in November 2024 for more information.

J. David Lowell Field Camp Scholarships: This GSA scholarship is for students to attend a summer field camp. Students are awarded $2000 each to attend the field camp of their choice based on diversity, economic/financial need, and merit. In addition, recipients of the J. David Lowell Scholarship receive a new Standard Transit compass with their name engraved on it from Brunton. Application opens in early spring and closes in early April each year.
