The "Silent Killer"
Sandra Woolstenhulme, DNP, FNP-C
Think of high blood pressure—the "silent killer"—like a sneaky enemy you can't see or feel. It's silently damaging your arteries, which can lead to serious trouble like a heart attack or stroke. But the good news? You have the power to fight back! Here’s your battle plan for lowering your blood pressure without always needing medication:
- Slash the salt. Those canned and processed foods are often packed with sodium. Get in the habit of reading the label.
- Embrace potassium. This mineral is your friend. Load up on leafy greens, bananas, beans, and salmon. Not a fan? No problem, Google some ideas to find a combo you love.
- Sip smart. Keep alcohol in check. That means one serving or less per day for women, and two or less for men. Honestly, less is always more.
- Move your body. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity a day. Find something you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s dancing, pickleball, walking, or hiking.
- DASH to health. Follow the DASH diet, which is designed to help lower blood pressure through healthy eating.
- Lose a little. Dropping just 5% of your body weight can make a big difference. For every 2.2 pounds you shed, your blood pressure can drop by up to 2 points.
Take control of your health by putting these tips into action. And remember to team up with your provider to build a strategy to defeat the "silent killer" for good.
