Course Details

Description: The CHW Core Training Course is designed to provide core competencies for CHWs through a self-paced curriculum, synchronous online sessions, and supplemented by five add-on health topic modules selected by the student. Students successfully completing the core course and course evaluation receive a Core CHW Training Certificate of Completion.

Audience: Idaho-based participants wanting to become a community health worker that have not worked as a CHW previously, or have not received CHW training.

Style: Hybrid - 48 contact hours total, of which 9 hours are live-online sessions, multiple sessions are available throughout the year

Tuition Options: Please Read Carefully Before Registering

General sessions of the CHW Core Course have a course tuition fee of $650. General sessions of the CHW Advanced Course have a course tuition fee of $850. Depending on your situation, there may be various options available to you for tuition support. Please read the following three options carefully to determine the best option for you.

OPTION ONE: EMPLOYER SUPPORTED

We encourage you to seek support from your employer to pay for all or part of your course tuition. Training improves productivity and efficiency, leads to higher morale and engagement, helps attract and retain talented CHWs, fosters innovation, and provides a competitive advantage for CHWs through a more skilled and adaptable workforce. We appreciate organizations who are able to support their CHW employees by paying for their employees’ course tuition.

OPTION TWO: IDAHO LAUNCH

If your employer cannot pay, can only pay partial, or you are currently unemployed, our program is registered in the Idaho Launch program. Idaho Launch allows you to submit an application for a one-time tuition assistance benefit for education programs. If you qualify, the Idaho Launch tuition voucher will cover up to 80% of the course tuition. The remaining 20% must be paid by an employer or direct payment.

The important thing to note is you can only apply once for Idaho LAUNCH (it is a one-time benefit), and no changes can be made after your application is accepted. Please note that the Lunch tuition voucher can be used for up to $3500 tuition cost in your request (this amount can cover 80% of your total course fees). Plan to add the CHW Core class ($650) and CHW Advanced class ($850) on the voucher. In addition, be sure to list any other courses you may plan to take on the voucher application, even if you are unsure if you will take them. See the current available course list here: https://wdc.appianportalsgov.com/idaho-launch/page/education-training

Currently there is about a 3-4 week lead time to get funding secured. Idaho Labor cannot back-date these vouchers, so if it is not fully processed before the start date of the class, it is not valid. Vouchers are valid for 6 months, but can be extended in some situations by request. For this reason, the Academy will also post a recommended “apply to Idaho Launch by” date when opening General Session course registration.

OPTION THREE: DIRECT PAYMENT

Lastly, you can pay the course tuition directly if the previously listed options do not work for you. If you are interested in the training, but unable to pay, tuition assistance may be available. Email sarahhibbert@isu.edu for more information.

Behavioral Health Focused CHW Training Sessions

For CHWs working in behavioral health settings in Idaho, with an emphasis on those serving children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth in high-need communities, we will have an annual cohort of trainees who apply and are accepted into the 2026 session of the CHW Core, Advanced, and Practicum that is focused on Behavioral Health as part of the Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program for Paraprofessionals by the Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW) in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The Behavioral Health Focused CHW Core course is planned to start January 2026. If you are interested in that BH focused training and/or the Idaho CHW Apprenticeship program, please email sarahhibbert@isu.edu for more information.

If you have any questions about tuition or how to register, please email sarahhibbert@isu.edu or call (208) 282-4160.
