VIP: Urban Deer & Stream Fish
What is the overarching goal of this project?
This class (Biol2280 and Biol4480) is a research experience for undergraduates project that a selected number of students will have the opportunity to participate in. The class is a collaborative project between the Department of Biological Sciences and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Pocatello Office.
What experience will students gain?
Students in the class collect observations of mule deer around the city of Pocatello and help compile them in an electronic database to identify areas of high deer use. Students drive established routes around the city in Driver-Observer pairs, once a week during the semester. At the end of the year, we put together a poster to present at the annual research roundup.

Registration Process
To be able to participate, students must agree to and be able to meet the following criteria:
1) Must be a Bio Sciences Major at Idaho State University
2) Be able to work collaboratively and respectfully with another member of the class weekly.
3) Have a valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle to drive observation routes within the City of Pocatello weekly. Usually takes about 60-90 minutes.
4) Have a phone with cell coverage that can access Google Maps and free navigation apps to compile the deer observations.
5) Willing to learn data entry and management of deer data.
6) Attend class meetings on campus, Friday, 2-3:30 pm, 1 to 2 times a month.
